It is easy to misinterpret No Filter at first; there is a sense of familiarity – of a certain strain of perfectionism that is rooted in jazz tradition. But that fades quickly, giving way to delightful finesse as the writing unfolds with more subtlety than it first seemed to contain. For example, the ballad “Chaos Reigns” flows without stint from tranquility to anxiety, rendered through strident sax and rock-guitar outbursts. The modest lyricism and the melodic flow of the original compositions reaches out to connect with listeners.

The French saxophonist Jérôme Sabbagh and the Australian guitarist Greg Tuohey seem built to complement each other. It is true that they have been united by a beautiful friendship since their meeting at the Berklee School Of Music in Boston. After setting up the band Flipside, they lost sight of each other for a while – the guitarist devoting himself to the rock scene for ten years while the saxophonist recorded Plugged In with Jozef Dumoulin and The Turn with Ben Monder (guitarist), on which the late drummer Paul Motian played a key role.

In a return to jazz expression, Greg Tuohey has once again enlisted his partner in crime, Jerome Sabbagh, in an analog recording experience that will get those juices flowing.
