The young virtuoso continues to tread new ground in the jazz world, trailblazing a path that clears the way for others to follow. The March 22 release of his new album, Ancestral Recall, will be hotly anticipated.
Ancestral Recall will be released via the Ropeadope and Stretch Music labels on March 22, 2019. For those in the know, this represents the next step on a path of forward-looking, genre-blind jazz that the New Orleans trumpeter, composer and producer proudly dubs stretch music.
Scott’s approach has garnered him considerable support, veering beyond the traditional parameters of jazz listenership into new territories, vernaculars and forms. On the back of his attention-grabbing The Centennial Trilogy, a three-album series that both recalled and refracted memories of the first ever jazz recordings, Scott is continuing to examine how music can act as a transcendental force, tearing down social, political and cultural barriers.
This is active music, with clear objectives – and it is a sense that can be inferred in the name: Ancestral Recall. Scott excavates multiple histories by using rhythm, harmony and cross-cultural synergy to decolonize the cultural soundscape, laying the seedlings of a “new folkloric tradition” in its wake.
The Grammy-nominated artist has no interest in singular narrative forms, wielding his dexterity to express diverse and inclusive values. For the album’s first single, Scott joins forces with the Poet Laureate of Hip Hop Saul Williams. Listen here:
