Hiatus Kaiyoté established itself as one of the best bands of the decade back in 2012 as well as a major influence on neo soul. Brilliantly guided by Tawk Tomahawk, the Melbourne quartet also gave us Naï Palm, an incredibly complete artist and voice, who has since been sampled by Anderson. Paak and Kendrick Lamar. With Pareidolia, it’s the turn of drummer Clever Austin (aka HK’s Perrin Moss) to step into the limelight by unveiling a dense and intuitive first solo album.

Here, the self-taught musician returns to his beginnings as a hip-hop producer, eyeing up beats, delicate textures and even noise music, patiently weaving them all around a cinematic groove. We are talking about hypnotic basslines a la Thundercat, glorious synths and drums of course, but also didgeridoo and (a lot of) guitar, for the love of the Brazilian Arthur Verocai’s rebellious instrument. Among a few guests, the drummer teams up with the amazing Georgia Anne Muldrow and, while he is praised amongst his peers, from Questlove to Chris Dave, Clever Austin delivers an incredible record.
