“Every Hero Needs a Villain”: After MF Doom last year, it’s now Ghostface’s turn to don the villain costume with Inspectah Deck, his colleague in the Wu-Tang Clan, who is accompanied by Esoteric.
The longtime collaborator of Adrian Younge and BadBadNotGood has no trouble assuming this role – among several notable appearances – without drawing the spotlight away from others. A good example of this comes with “The King Heard Voices.”
You don’t need to be a fan of Marvel comics to get swept up in the game. It’s playful, never wasteful and the opus is relatively short (less than forty minutes for twelve tracks). Deploying his usual taste for cavernous atmospheres, fragments of electric guitar and crafted vocal samples, the producer 7L breaks the monotony with sometimes-unexpected instrumental variations and takes care with transitions between tracks.
From the flashback “Czarrcade ’87” to “Morning Ritual,” and its slightly softened piano, most pieces sustain the attention of the listener without difficulty. Some are top quality, such as the longest, “Listen to the Color,” which is rich in tonal shifts.
