Yuletide Bangerz is a delightfully warped trawl through the holiday music archives. Under the directorship of California-based rapper and producer Jonwayne, fragments and samples from Christmas songs and movies—including Muppets and Griswolds—are twisted and manipulated into fresh festive soundscapes.
Fierce snapping snares are added to a snatch of Donny Hathaway’s “This Christmas” to become the upbeat “Mistletoe,” Vince Guaraldi’s iconic “Christmas Time Is Here” is infused with a slinky bossa nova vibe, and Marvin Gaye’s moody “Purple Snowflakes” gets the slurred chopped-and-screwed treatment on “Purple.” Maintaining a sense of humor to the end, “Hula Hoop” stars the voices Alvin and the Chipmunks—until the troupe’s high-pitched trilling is mercilessly ground to a halt as the album comes to an end.
