She was born in Zambia, raised in Botswana and now currently resides in Melbourne. An international artist in every sense of the word, she achieved recognition in 2017 with her Australian Music Prize-winning album of the year Birds and the BEE9.

Now, she’s back with a striking visual and a song she described as being all about “balance.” In a statement, Sampa The Great expressed the importance of understanding your balance between feminine and masculine energy in a “deeply unbalanced world.”

The video, directed by Modu Sesay, brings the track to life in a powerful way. In different settings and guises, Sampa The Great delivers her richly-toned flow, often looking directly into the camera’s lens. Production by Rahki and Silentjay features crisp and bouncy percussion, minimalistic under flights of sax that splash color into the mix.

Just after the two minute mark, Nadeem Din-Gabisi (of London’s Steamdown collective) offers a spoken word section that works well, making Sampa’s re-entry, alongside bass and horns afterwards, all the more effective. Watch it here.
