Contemporary soul-funk powerhouse Lee Fields keeps on adding to an already prolific fifty-year career. His latest track "Will I Get Off Easy" shows that Fields knows when to deploy his vocal forces and when to keep them under expert control.

Coming at us in crisp monochrome from the Diamond Mine in Queens, NY, Lee Fields and The Expressions show exactly why they are one of the most revered soul-funk outfits on the scene. 2019 is shaping up to be an exciting time for fans of Fields. Ahead of his upcoming album, he released “It Rains Love” along with its official video in January, a heartbreaking ode to long-lasting love that was modeled on his own nearly fifty-year relationship.

February has given us another instalment: “Will I Get Off Easy.” It follows a similar vein to “It Rains Love,” taking Fields’ power and containing it in a concentrated dose of romantic soul. Having been long compared to the late James Brown, ‘little JB’ seems to be carving out a new chapter of his career with some very personal songs – ones that nobody but Fields would be able to deliver.

“Will I Get Off Easy” opens onto a scene of laughter and energy. Paul Spring’s guitar jangles sporadically and Homer Steinweiss cooks up a quick-beat rhythm on the drums. Lee exclaims like a circus ringmaster: “Step it on up ladies and gentlemen … you’re gonna see something you aint’ never seen tonight!”

Not long after the slow groove unfolds and Fields’ vocals kick in, we get the familiar sense of being in the hands of a master soulman. Experience it here:

The full album It Rains Love will be released on April 5 via Big Crown Records.
