While the feminist message doesn’t transpire musically, the Norwegian saxophonist Hanna Paulsberg declares it on the back cover of her fourth album, Daughter Of The Sun, by dedicating it to the Egyptian queen Hatshepsut as well as to all the strong women who have fought throughout history.
As proof of the musical maturity that she has now acquired, she called on the Swedish trumpeter Magnus Broo to help her trio, which for many years has been made up of talented thirty-somethings from her generation. The least that can be said is that he immediately blends into the meanderings of the saxophonist’s poetic world and her that of her accomplices (we retain the bassist Trygve Fiske’s score).
The South African accents on “Bouncing With Flower Buds” and “Hemulen Tar Ferie” don’t neglect to borrow complex rhythms or teeter into Noise music. They brighten the record with their implicit references to Chris McGregor and Abdullah Ibrahim while “Daughter of the Sun” unfolds its tender lyricism. All the tracks show that Hanna Paulsberg is a composer who knows how to bring out an original musical world.
